The first thing that comes to mind when I think of the 1980's are some of my favourite films, directed by John Hughes - The Breakfast Club, Some Kind of Wonderful, Pretty In Pink etc. However the Brat Pack had already been covered! So I had to re-think, and the other thing that sprang to mind was the link between the music industry and the fashion industry at the time, which led me to Madonna.
Madonna paved the way for numerous artists in the music business, most famously probably Lady Gaga, for her outlandish style (especially for that era) and her fashion sense was iconic. Looking at all of her videos from the time, she resembles the style of the 1980's to a tee, from the tomboy look, the bleach blonde hair, the legwarmers, crop-tops, heavy make up, acid wash denim and shoulder pads. The fact that she is still around today shows what an icon she was, and the fact some, if not most of the fashion is now back in style shows that in a way it was timeless, if a little questionable! The look from this photo can be seen elsewhere as the style is also seen in the John Hughes movie 'Some Kind of Wonderful'. The main female character Watts, is a tomboy and dresses mostly throughout the movie in black and white, with the iconic bleach blonde hair.
When I think of the 1980's, Madonna stands out as being an iconic solo female artist who was both musically and sexually 'out-there' for the time and arguably helped fellow women by doing so.
